hi everyone. i was just visting my dad and i noticed that his 4 year old shepherd (great dog) had a gel like substance on both of her eyes. he has always owned shepherds and has never seen anything like this. my dad said that he has taken her to three differents vets about it. i think that they gave him a cream for her eyes. he is quite upset and worried and has no access to the internet. i told him that i would do some research on the net when i got back home. it seemed like pannus, but i could not find a real informative website on it. any clue on a good website or any help on treatment?? i know from experience that these forums (i have a yorkie with reoccuring giardia) can be sometimes more helpful than vets. i would love to ease my dad's mind. thanks

That sounds like pannus but of course the only way to be sure is for your dad to take the dog to a veterinarian who can test for pannus. If it is pannus then he can give drops that will keep the condition from progressing (and the dog going blind).

i would take the dog to a vet optimologist. regular vets aren't equipt to diagnose or treat pannus with the proper meds. they might give an ointment or a steroid but the optimologist has of course the proper schooling to recognize specific eye issues, and also they have specific meds especially made for the problem. but, it could also be something else, so again i would go right to a specialist, you don't fool with the eyes.
