For those who've had both short and long-coated

GSD's, is it true that the long-coated ones shed less? I have a coated GSD, and it's not too hard to keep the dog hair cleaned up (although I'm a neat-freak, and vacuum daily, etc anyway, so the dog doesn't make that much difference). But the only short-coated GSD's we had when we were kids were outdoors only, so I have nothing to compare to.

Someone was asking me about the shedding yesterday, and I wasn't sure what the right answer was.

Tosca is my first long coat and feel that she doesn't shed as much as my previous dogs. I think the cat sheds more than the dog.
So far, Tosca has not blown a coat like the normal stock coats. Lucky me! She looks beautiful all the time.

I have both and when my short coat sheds she REALLY sheds but not my long coat he don't shed half as bad as my other 2 short coats
My long coats have shed just as bad as the "regular" coats. I must add though that I have had long STOCK coats, meaning they DID have undercoats.
My LC also has a thick undercoat
The different I see is my long stock coats hold their hair, it is loose just waiting for me to brush. My Stock coat, when she is blowing the hair just falls off of her, when you touch her, when she shakes, when she rolls, ets.

That is exactly how I remember it with my long- coated GSD growing up. I would love to pull he clumps of loose hair off of him, he never really dropped the hair all in the house. Now Molly is a short stock coat and hair is always falling off her! I hate when I vacuum the house and then my husband decides to give Molly a good rub down and hair goes everywhere
I always tell him I would appreciate him doing that before I vacuum

Forgot to say that Kodee is also a long stock coat. Thanks for the replies.
I have a short stock and a long coat and they both shed very little. Onyx blew her coat for the first time at 19 mos and it lasted about 2 weeks, Kacie has never really blown her coat, except when I first adopted her in April of '07, but I have fuzzyfloats around all the time, try to vac daily. I brush them couple x's a week and they are fed RAW. I think that diet make all the difference. That and it is hair vs fur. Individual hair on a stock is a pain, compared to the longer coats clumps of fur. I am dog sitting a purina one fed stock coat girl and she is a shedding shedder- and she does get brushed w/ a furminator. Just transporting her 7 miles , my car is full of fur...I would love to keep her for a couple of mos. get her on my dogs diet and let her owner see the change in her. Plus she is skin and bones, no muscle on her that I can feel.
