Hello all!! Just a few questions for curiosity purposes only!! What day did your gsd start labor starting from the day of tie? I've overflowed my brain with info. Maybe too much!! Any advice you wish you would have known with your first?? We are beyond excited to meet these guys. We are at day 61 today. Any guesses on how many she has in there? :) TIA!!! ?

That hair can come out on its own. It's 63 days from the day of ovulation. That can be before or after the day of the first tie. Or right on it.

Usually we start taking the temperature at about day 59 or 60, twice a day (same time, morning and evening), and look for a gradual drop to about 100, and them a 1.5-2 degree drop where it stays there about 12 hours -- then she should whelp within 24 hours.

Looks like you are getting close. Take her temp, if she is around 98 degrees, it should happen within a day. Watch her too. If you are worried take her to the vet and have them check progesterone.

Good luck.

Well, one of the books I have says that if the hair doesn't fall out on its own, to shave it. I never have. But the hair does come out while pups are nursing most of the time I think. Usually not like that though. So, yeah, probably shaved.

People worry about mastitis. So far, I haven't dealt with that at all. I leave that area alone. I don't clean it. I don't touch. I keep the whelping box clean, and try to keep my germs away from where the pups are eating and from the bitch's vulnerable areas. I also clean my hands with a batril soap before handling whelps or the bitch in the whelping process. My guess in shaving this is to be able to recognize mastitis if it happens.

apologize for late response!

thank you for your replies I had issues logging back in!! to answer your questions I did not shave her, the hair fell out on its own. We had 9 healthy beautiful pups!! almost a week old today and doing great. I do have some major questions just purely our out of curiosity and please don't judge me for wondering and that I do not have the register info on my sure, mom and dad were health and hip tested. it's only that our males previous owner lost his paperwork and cannot lead me in the direction of finding his pedigree. We have several sables sales in the litter, our sire is solid black, dam is sable. I am so curious as to what some of these pups will end up being. there are a couple that are solid black but we also have a few mostly black except for under their tail, a few strands of tan on cheeks and feet. do you know the liklihood of us having saddle pups or bicolor?
