Kane has been itching alot lately; no recent changes in diet (he is on TOTW high praire blend) not sure if it is the change in weather but I also noticed his fur is very dry and brittle.... Can I put him on fish oil (for human consumption), and how much would I give him (he is about 90 lbs - 2 1/2 yrs old). And is fish oil the best thing to go with in this situation? Thanks!

I would go with 2000mg at each meal and supplement with 400iu of E(once a day) I like to use pure cold water salmon oil instead of fish oil.
A humidifier in the house helps the skin and coat as well. Ours too!

Thank you for the responses!

OnyxGirl - I will get him started on the cold water salmon oil - thank you for the suggestion :) Just to be sure, you are referring to vitamin E, correct?

DoggieDad - He does not have fleas; when he first started the itching I did use an organic shampoo to try to alleviate, but unfortunately he's still itching :( Was hoping for an easy fix but I was not that lucky! ;)

Verivus - I will definitely watch; i'm really hoping this helps him - hate to see my little man in any discomfort! I've tried him on fish based food (wellness core) but that seemed to create alot of build up in his ears, so I switched him to wellness core (think that was chkn), and now for a while he's been back to TOTW - which he seemed to do well on to begin with - I only switched because wellness seemed to be a better quality food than TOTW. Every switch I always did gradually b/c Kane is very sensitive to change... will keep this in mind also though - Thank you :)

Onyxgirl - one more question, you said 2000mg / meal; i feed 2 meals a day - is that sufficient? Thanks again!

Crystal, you can give 2000mg every meal but only one gelcap of E daily. Dogs produce E, but supplementing with oils will deplete their supply so we have to add E when giving oils. If you see some ear problems after starting the salmon oil, your dog may have sensitivity to fish so will have to go with other type omegas. Keep an eye on that.

Humidity in the home really helps when the furnace is running.

Yes, did not think about his reaction to fish until I was out picking up the salmon oil today.... will have to keep an eye on that & look into humidifiers too - Thank you again (from me & Kane!) for all your help with this :)
