I wouldn't listen to your boyfriend. Dogs don't need to learn how to defend themselves, the owners are the ones that need to do the defending.
I would avoid the dog park when that dog is around, or talk to the owner that you aren't comfortable with her dog playing that rough with your dog, and for her to call her dog back. If she can't call her dog back, she shouldn't be there.
