Dog Serves As Tigers' Mom
Raw Video-Dog Nurses Tiger Cubs

"see bottom for link to videos"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A dog at a southeast Kansas zoo has adopted
three tiger cubs abandoned by their mother.

Safari Zoological Park owner Tom Harvey said the tiger cubs were
born Sunday, but the mother had rejected them.

Harvey said the cubs were then put in the care of a golden
retriever.

Puppies take about the same amount of time as tiger cubs to
develop, and Harvey says the adoptive mother just recently weaned
her own puppies.

He says the dog licks, cleans and feeds the cubs.

The Safari Zoological Park specializes in endangered species.

You have about two weeks to see the tiger cubs and their doggy mom. Call (620) 879-2885 for park hours.

Many hand reared tiger cubs are adopted by dogs - not always nursing dogs, but female dogs none the less who treat them like puppies, stimulating them for potty behavior, and hanging out with them. We have a tiger cub in the Pittsburgh Zoo, also rejected by mom, who is being hand fed and has been adopted by one of the zoo keepers' female Lab.

A friend of mine reared a tiger cub with 2 Great Pyr females....I have tons of photos and video of the the dogs with the cub from 5 days old on. The dynamics were fascinating, and the dogs could take food off the tiger when she was 9 months old and weighed 200 pounds....I have a photo of her on my website, need to scan in some as a baby!
