Does anyone's GSD do this

1831 Views 15 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Cassidy's Mom
Jasper turned 3 today, and I also believe he has hit his maturity level.

Jasper is very well socialized, and loves people.

I usually let Jasper smell people first, before petting is allowed (I do this so if he is overly excited-which is a rarity) it doesn't reinforce the behavior.

So, when Jasper meets someone, and after they pet him (and everyone who meets him, loves him, and they show it (happiness, smiles, etc), Jasper slithers around them like a snake, ears back, very happy looking, and just loves to be loved.

I assume this is pure happiness, and taking it all in (did this with my bragg post the other day).

So does anyone elses GSD do this, and am I correct in my thoughts?

Thanks

Jack

i'm not 100% sure what you mean, but this is Tildens "accepting some lovin" body posture. (he's meeting both guys pictured for the first time). he licks his lips and circles around their arms... but not like a snake, lol

I know exactly what you mean because Rafi does this. He puts his ears back and circles around their body. I think of it more like a cat than a snake but I get what you're saying.

In Rafi's case he is very happy. He loves everyone and greets all people with kisses and squiggles and rubs.

He has a fan club in my neighborhood because he's so friendly!

LOL, basically what I mean is he is like a snake, he goes around them and rubs/coils (full circle around them with his full body...almost like his 4 brothers and 1 sister (cats) do when they are happy).

Maybe he is part cat

But I really do think its an affection display, I just love behavior, and studying it (and am curious if anyone elses GSD does it

I believe with cats they do it to rub their scent glands on the particular object in question, maybe its the same?

I love Tilden, reminds me of Cassidy Moms beautiful Long hairs, long hairs are my fave

When Molly meets new people, and is getting some lovin' (especially some good old butt rubs) her ears will go back and she will look at them with her beautiful brown eyes and while they are rubbing her butt, she will bend herself so that her nose comes around and touches the person's hand rubbing her butt and then will give them gentle kisses on their hand. People love that

aww thanks jasper, i love him too! dena is actually the first lhgsd i fell in love with and inspired me to get tilden.

after reading about rafi, tilden doesnt do the thing you guys are describing. he's more like the 2nd pic i posted where he'll "cup" the persons hand between his neck and shoulder, then he bows his head, closes his eyes, and gets all "deep" and does the tongue thing. when they stop petting him he comes to me like "did you see that mom
"

gia on the other hand has mastered the german shepherd lean, complete with the paw on your foot (and she's a heavy girl!)

Emma does that, but I kind of thought it was a submission kind of thing..but I'm not sure.
our boy is 11 months and he curls around you when he meets you. he'll also walk in between your legs doing figure 8's. i took it like you did, pure happiness or just super friendly. so far he does it with everyone. only problem is he'll do the between the legs thing whether you're tall enough or not.
Rocky does this to me every day. He is overly excited and doesn't know how to express his happiness and I feel he doesn't want me to go anywhere but stay right there and just let him mark his scent all over me claiming me from the other dogs. Then he sits and blocks the door so I can't leave until I smooch him up and tell him what a hunk he is and gets all his favorite scritches. It makes the other dogs jealous and I think this is part of why he does it. He's telling them, "hey I'm her main hunka bunka, y'all are just old cheese." Of course I love them all equally.
oliver is about the same thing.ears are back and head straight up ready for "kiss-kiss",he somewhat dance but he also jumps! but not as much now,i have been working on that.
he also likes to walk between your leggs!!

We've never had a GSD that did not lay their ears back when they were happy. The ears and the cat like movement usually precede the in your face kisses etc!

Only with us and people she knows. She doesn't seek affection/attention from anyone new. She keeps her distance and watches.
Now, that is with adults. With children and babies, she is MORE than happy to make friends. She will dance around them with that 'you're so great!!!!' look.
My eldest is so inclined -- she rubbs her head, especially, on people. A knowledgable friend told me that this is more marking behavior - that the dog is rubbing his scent on the rubbee...

Ava does this too, she writhes around people ears flat back and looks like she is in heaven, she loves people, I keep telling her (jokingly) that she is such a disgrace, she has not a single ounce of GSD aloofness. Ithought she would outgrow it, it is pretty cute, but not yet.

Yep, Dena especially. Keefer will just lean against people while they pet him, with his head up, eyes half closed, and a blissful expression as if he's saying "this is the life!". Dena does this thing I refer to as flirting - she puts on her submissive ears (someone on the board referred to this as the 'otter head' or 'love ears') and a big doggy grin on her face while she sidles up to people and dances around them. She seems to be saying "look at me, and how pretty I am!" If they give her the slightest bit of attention she'll jump up and kiss their face, so if I see her start to flirt I have to call out "Dena, no jumping!!!", and I can usually stop her before she does it. She'll be 4 in September, and she STILL does this!

Betsy, my dogs are a disgrace too, not a single aloof bone in their entire bodies, lol! Two weeks ago, we were at a local brewpub where we take the dogs almost every weekend for lunch. We sit outside with them, (we leash them to the outside of the short wrought iron fence surrounding the seating area next to our table) and there was a woman at the table next to us sitting by herself. She had to be in her 80's and she started asking questions about the dogs - are they protective, that sort of thing. I told her they were really friendly.

Her: "But if someone approached you, they'd protect you, right?" Me: "Well, they'd probably lick them to death first". A few minutes later one of the servers who knows us well and loves the dogs came out to take our order, said "yay, my favorite dogs!" when she saw us, and came over and started petting them. They put their paws up on the fence and were kissing her face while she gave them love. I looked at the woman, gestured towards my 'protective' shepherds slobbering all over our server and said "see?"
She was very impressed by them, and commented several times about how good they were. Several other people came by to see and pet them, they laid there calmly when they weren't meeting people, and they didn't even bark when a fire truck went by with the siren going. Dena & Keefer are regulars there, we've been taking them almost every weekend since they were puppies.
