Cruz is now 6 months. He's been on Large Breed Puppy since we got him. We are now at the point on needing another bag of food. So should it be another bag of LG Breed Puppy or Adult large breed food?

I've read different opinions from different sources. I myself have always fed my former GSD's puppy up to about a year old but I've read 6 months is where to switch them to adult food.

What say the experts around here? Any breeders on the site that would like to give thier opinions? I just want whats best for Cruz.

i've never fed my dogs puppy food.

This is kind of what I was looking for. So you have always fed Adult or you feed raw diet then?

I understand the raw diet reasoning, but if adult food throughout then what reasons for adult only?

What is the main difference if any between puppy and adult food? Do they look or smell any different? Our 7 month old is still on puppy food and she loves it, but then again never had adult food yet.

I believe the main difference is that crude protien levels are higher in puppy foor vs some adult foods. I think I seen several adult formulas come close to the protien levels of puppy food though.

I understand that as pups they are still going through growth rates at 6 months. I wonder that if growth rates are slowing to the point where too much protien in the diet is wasted by feeding puppy formulas? So would adult food be adequate at this stage of growth?

Jafo.

Look into Fromm. I feed grain free Four Star.

Good for all life stages. I've got my 5 month old male on it, two 4 year old sisters and another 12 year old female.

Can easily switch amongst flavors / proteins. It's high quality stuff made in the USA by a family owned company.

It's a touch on the high $$$ side, but piece of mind in what I feed my GSD's is worth it.

Good luck.

Do they sell this at Petco? I currently have Cruz on Blue Buffalo lg. breed puppy. It's almost $60 for the large bag. Thats pretty pricely for me.

There are sooooo many brands and formulas out there. Next time I'm in Petco, I'll look for it. Easy name to remember. Thanks.

Petco, Petsmart, et al do not carry.

There's a dealer / store locator on the Fromm website.

Hopefully, you can find it close by.

Doesn't large breed puppy formula have extras like DHA for brain & eye development as well as other factors?LBP has come a long way since I got my 1st dog almost 12 years ago. I know my vet has always said that large dogs grow & develop physically & mentally until about 1 1/2 - 2 years & to feed LBP food until 1 year. Maybe the thinking has changed?
