Pups are 7 and half months and eating Purina puppy focus as breeder started and vet said keep on puppy food a year. Should we start transition to adult chicken and rice or wait? Or think about other options? Welcome advice.
Previous gsd we lost to lymphoma at 8 yrs was always on puRina chicken and rice mixed with little canned.

I switched a while ago. Might as well switch.
Curious about your previous gsd. Was he/she n
speutered at a young age? A study found a rise in lymphoma cancers of dogs speutered at a young age.

That is interesting. When my dog had cancer and I used to take him to the clinic, it seemed the most common cancer among other dogs regardless of breed was lymphoma.

I would change the dogs to a food with high quality ingredients, instead of the questionable ones in the Purina products. ;)

Always transition with small amounts of new food mixed with old, taking a week or two to change. If stool get loose, go back to previous amount fed (where stool was solid) and hold at that amount for a few days until their gut gets use to it. Then increase again (and watch). This is called "bowel tolerance".

I would also suggest a high quality Digestive Enzyme (helps to assimilate food) & a ProBiotic (keeps the "good" bacteria in the gut). Since about 75% of the immune system lies in the gut, it is very important to keep it healthy.

I too lost my last GSD male in May to Lymphoma. He was a month shy of his 9th birthday. He was neutered at almost 5 months old. I wondered myself about the connection between neutering at a young age or at all and a increased risk of lymphoma. My current pup is 6 months old...I plan on keeping him in tact..unless there is a medical reason down the road.

As far as the food questions go...I agree with others. Get the highest quality kibble you can afford. I feed mine Orijen Large Breed Puppy. He is doing very well on it so far...but it is pricey. Acana is also made by Champion who makes Orijen. I heard From is good to.

Sorry to hear about your GSD. It was heart breaking.

Hi thanks for replies. Our late gsd was neutered at 10 months. We should have left it I guess..we did it because breeder contract stipulated no ckc papers till we did it.
This time it was because we have male female pups and the vet said get done together because they'll both recuperate together. Well. In hindsight we regret. Especially after what happened there.
