Hi there,
My GSD has taken a liking to lunge at cars. The bigger the truck or S.U.V the worse it is. I have tried the treat thing...nothing. I now have to put him in sit with his prong collar when I begin to see the car or truck approach. Sometimes he'll listen sometimes he will still try to lunge and bark minutes thereafter.
To walk my dog has become exhausting. I literally have to stop everytime a car or truck goes by and pray that he does'nt lunge or take after it and get run over. I love him to death but am afraid that he might hurt himself one day. I know my breeder uses e collars to train her GSDs but would like to hear any input or advice from anyone that is willing to give it. Thank you in advance.
regards,
Debbie

Debbie, Baron has just started doing the lunging thing this week. He's only three and a half months but this immediately worried me. I'm curious to see what everybody says. I started giving him a little tug on the leash and correcting him. If he does it really hard I make him sit.

Baronthegreat,
IDK,some people tell me that he will eventually grow out of it. How long will that be???? I do the same thing. I put him in sit as soon as I see a car or truck approaching. Keep me posted on how Baron is coming along with the issue. BTW, Romy will be one yr. old on the 16th of this month. Just to show you...this behaviour can pop up at any time. Scary....

Well it seems to be subsiding already and its only been a couple days. I did the same thing tonight when my neighbor was outside unloading groceries he wanted to go over there so bad. I'm trying to get him to calm down before he meets people. He has to understand that jumping on people and running around like a maniac isn't good. The lunging thing with cars though seemed to ease up to just a hard look and strain on the lead. If its hard pressure on the lead then I give just a little tug to get his attention and tell him to sit. When he does he gets praise and one piece of kibble. I know with Baron the way to his brain is through his stomach. When their is a treat in my hand there could be kittens doing cartwheels down the street and he could care less. Keep us updated on Romy's progress and HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROMY

My dog did this a lot as a puppy. He doesn't go for cars as much anymore, now he wants to lunge at PEOPLE passing, which makes it a lot worse. I have been practicing keeping his attention on me when a person or car is coming and having him in a sit until person/car passes by. Once they have passed, I give him a treat.

My pup does the EXACT same thing. The other day she lunged at a large truck driving by on the road!
I just don't get it!

I'll definately be watching the responses to this thread...
