Hi everyone, I'm moving back to LA with Yogi mid July and since airlines won't fly dogs when its above 85F we're driving. I don't mind it but its the first time doing a cross country drive solo. Im renting a GL 450 for the trip and will gladly pay the cleanup cost for my little buddy to ride shotgun. Ive looked through previous posts about dog harnesses and watched a few youtube videos(the one with the sled) where all the harnesses failed.

For those of you out there that use a car harness which one and if you've actually had to use it in a accident or quick stop did it work? The one model I've been focused on is the Impact Dog harness by Kurgo - Impact Harness | Dog Car Harness it seems really sturdy but also failed along with the other major harnesses in this video -
. I can keep him in his crate but i was planning on filling it with stuff since I'm also driving a lot of crap home.

Thanks in advance

I know this is not what you want to hear, but in my experience, they are safest if crated. Supposedly this is a really good crate. Rough Tough Kennel.

I wouldn't trust a harness. I tried them a few years ago, the dog can still move around to some degree. If you have to slam on the brakes I really don't think they're going to keep the dog from flying forward/sideways etc.

That's a really cute pup in your avatar, do you have any other pictures?

Thanks for the responses, I know I should keep him in the crate but that mental picture of him with his doggles on, head out the window, slobber running down the side of the car...haha I'll keep him in his crate for his own good.

thanks again

The pup in my Avatar is Yogi when he was ~4/5 months old. He's 1yr 3mos now i'll post some pictures in a few days after I'm done moving out.

I use a Sleepypod harness, only one that's crash tested and passed. Nothing is perfect but it's worth the peace of mind

I prefer to use a seatbelt harness because I've seen the opposite... Cases where dogs in crates were injured in an accident due to the crate buckling, or the crate broke open and dogs ended up loose on the highway. :(

The best harness that has been crash tested is the Sleepypod harness. You can read more about some testing that was done on a bunch of harnesses here:
