Five listed on PF:
Jack, discarded by owner for having a leg injury
Matilda, stray, emaciated
Linda, taken from hoarder
Jimmy, discarded by breeder
JoAnn, discarded by breeder
I don’t mean to sound like an idiot but do breeders normally just “discard” their breeding stock like Jimmy and Joann’s owner/breeder? It seems so cruel to me. If they are breeders, and no longer want/use the dog, cant they sell them at a reduced price and make sure they go to good homes? I hope all breeders don’t use this approach.
I would guess these are BYB, no good breeder would do this!
Five GSDs. This is so sad. I will email Tammy at Kentucky working K-9s and see if she can help. Like everybody else - sometimes she has room and sometimes she doesn't. Once in a while I get lucky - send her for one and she goes home with two. At least I will let her know they are there. If she can't help, maybe she knows someone who can.

This shelter is very rescue friendly and helps with transport. Anyone?

Heartbreaking. Thrown away like so much trash. I hate people .....well, some of them anyway.

Shelter posted JoAnn and Jim are nice dogs, gentle, walk on leash.
Wonder how many puppies they had to raise before getting dumped, and how many of their puppies also ended up at the pound.

StevenZachsMom, thank you for asking Tammy! I hope she can make the time to drive out and look at these five.

Based on the info the shelter put on PF, three (Jack, JoAnn, Jim) are beyond the age for a career change to working dog, they'll need rescue as a companion dog. Linda would be the right age but, coming from a hoarding situation, she'll probably didn't get the intense socialization needed to be out working in public, though she will probably be just fine as a companion in a more quiet home. Maybe Matilda could be a candidate for work, Tammy will know if she has a spot and the time to go there. But this might not be the case, as you said.

Yet another reason to only support reputable breeders. Good breeders don't do this, backyard breeders and puppy mills do it all the time.

Reputable breeders either keep their retired bitches as personal pets or spay them and adopt them out to approved homes.
OK - I have great news back from Tammy. She just got off the phone with the shelter. All the GSDs have been adopted, except Jack, the one with the leg injury. Jack is in foster care and it looks like his foster is going to adopt him.

Tammy also has a request...She is looking for an older male PB GSD, PB Belgian (other shepherd.) By older, she is talking 5 to 12 years. She wants a protective type dog. She is a trainer and can work with issues. She wants to pull a dog from a high kill shelter. This will be Tammy's personal dog. I told her I would keep my eyes and ears open.

An older male shepherd in a high kill shelter should be pretty easy to come by. If anyone knows of candidates, please PM me.

Thanks,
Jan
RunSarahRun - I should mention that Tammy also trains pet quality dogs. I asked her to go to the shelter once to pull a female, that no one seemed interested in. The shelter said she was dog aggressive. While Tammy was there, the shelter pulled out a male shepherd. Tammy went home with both. The female was not dog aggressive. When Tammy got her home, she jumped out of the truck and started playing with the other dogs. Tammy trained her in S&R. The male was pet quality, but she already had someone in mind for him. The adopter paid her to train him in basic obedience and he went to a good home. I have just found Tammy to be an excellent resource. Sorry to say I have never had the pleasure of meeting her.

Where does Tammy live so we know where to look?
Tammy lives near Bowling Green, Kentucky - just north of Nashville, TN. She is known by many of the shelters in the area. She has a knack for figuring out if a dog is good at a particular job. She pulls them from high kill shelters, trains them and adopts them out. She also does private training. She does not only work with shepherds, or PBs, but I know she has a soft spot for GSDs.

She is trying to fill the void left by her previous GSD boy. I think the type of dog she is looking for will probably not make it to the adoption floor. She might be better off contacting the shelters so they know to call her if they get a likely candidate. Her last boy was on death row. He was people aggressive. She said he was not a dog you would turn your back on. He was an older GSD. Obviously, he was not a dog that would have made it into rescue. Tammy has a lot of acres and the dog was trained to stay on the property. He had free run of the house with a doggie door. Tammy was in complete control of him, but he did not allow strangers onto the property. Tammy would like to train another such dog. She lives in an isolated location and felt safe with that dog. Plus - she adored him.

A sweet older boy who loves everybody would not fit the bill. (He would be MY kind of dog.) Unfortunately, I fear a dog that would fit the bill, will get PTS before we even hear about him. So please, keep your ears open.

Thank you,
Jan

Jax, Thank you for the link to Chief. It looks like he is spoken for. Anyway, he seems much too nice. LOL! I love nice senior dogs, but I already have one of those. Tammy is looking for a little more nasty.

Would it do any good to put a word in here in Texas? I mean I wouldnt mind being a go between with the shelters here but I dont know about transport all the way to her with an aggressive dog? Just let me know.
Thanks Narny. I appreciate that. I will contact Tammy to see if she is limiting her search to the Kentucky area. She lives in Warren County. I know she has rescued from surrounding counties. I would think it is probably best that the dog is in a shelter close enough to where she can meet him to evaluate him for herself.

Jan, does this mean all 5 of the GS that came in are safe?

thanks,
Vicki, Yes. From what Tammy told me, she spoke to the shelter staff and was told all had been adopted, except Jack, who was in foster. I did notice that the dogs are still listed on petfinder. That does bother me, but I know the shelter may not have had time to update the site. Tammy works with this shelter frequently so I trust she was given the correct information. The shelter can be slow in responding to calls and emails. I am in MD, but I can try to double check on these 5, just to be on the safe side.

Jack German Shepherd Dog Large Adult Male URGENT! Surrendered over to Animal Control because his rear leg is injured, he's limping
Approx Age: we aged him at approx 6 yrs old but his owners said he was 12 yrs . Approx Weight: 65 lbs UNDER WEIGHT Jack was surrendered to County Animal Control because his owners could not afford vet care for him. He has either an injury to his rear leg/hip or hip dysplasia due to his age. He is very timid at the moment and we are working on gaining his trust. He needs to gain a little weight, but not too much because of his hip. German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia and it is better to keep them a little underweight. Jack has always been kept in a kennel on his owner's property, so this environment is scary and new to him, hopefully with time, he will come around. If you can't adopt, come and take him for a walk and spend some time with him to help socialize him.

Linda Purebred German Shepherd Dog Large Young Female ~ I’m Linda, a SWEET girl who just needs a great, loving home. I have had a HARD TIME in life so far. I came from a home with lots of doggies. My owner was older, and unable to take care of any of us. I lived in a small kennel, unable to get out for exercise or to go potty. I stayed in my own filth, and never knew that life could be so different. I do walk funny, since Ive never really walked anywhere. When I got to the shelter, I actually got to walk on grass for the first time! Because of what Ive been through, I need work not just physically, but mentally, too. If you're looking to save an AMAZING GIRL who has never known love, please come see me today. Once you see how WONDERFUL I am, and see the POTENTIAL in my sad eyes, you wont be able to walk away. http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17424238
