I use raw knuckle and marrow bones for both dogs, they love them :)

I get generic soup bones from the store (Knuckle, femurs, etc) - they come frozen and Emma loves them that way. She has the outside clean in an hour....then hides them around the house and in the couch:eek::D They last a week, before they start to smell.

Rule of thumb:
* large enough so it cannot get swallowed in one piece (so no single rip, but the whole rack)
* not cooked (bone gets brittle)

If you're just looking for general things for your dog to chew on, I suggest elk/deer antlers. They're kinda pricey (between $10 and $25 depending on size and where you buy them), but they last so long. Also, bully sticks/springs.

when i give my dog elk antler the peice is cut 8" to 10" long
and it's 1&1/2" to 2" in diameter.

* large enough so it cannot get swallowed in one piece (so no single rip, but the whole rack)
* not cooked (bone gets brittle)
