My 1.5 yr GSD is having bloody diarrhoea and vomitting with decreased appetite -on and off for almost 15 days now. My Vet labelled it as viral/?bacterial and was being treated with antibiotics, iv fluids, probiotics and pantoprazole.

Today I changed my vet and he says it is protozoal infection- E Canis. My dog still is having bloody diarrhoea. Don’t know what to do! ?

I have seen bloody diarrhea often with some kinds of protozoal infections in dogs (in the U.S., coccidia is an example of this sort of infection). It clears up in about 2 days on the right drug -- here the most modern (and effective) drug to treat coccidia would be Ponazuril, though there are other older options that work too.

However... E. canis is confusing me here. That organsm causes Ehrliciosis (from Ehrlichia canis)....it's a very serious tick-borne disease:

It's usually known to cause bleeding disorders, not GI distress. The article I linked described how diagnosis normally happens, and the recommendation of the new PCR (DNA-based) test for it. It's usually treated by 4-6 weeks of antibiotics -- a very long course of them!

How was the diagnosis of E. canis made? Through a laboratory blood test?

What country are you in? (In the United States, I'd suggest going to an Internal Medicine specialist or university vet school clinic if local vets are flummoxed by the case.)
