My friends have been fostering an 18 month old GSD for about two weeks now. They've noticed its poop is more 'cowpile' in discription than solid poops. They are thinking of giving him a bland diet, but can someone tell me what that would consist of? The dog has been checked by a vet and it doesn't appear to have any GI related issues. I'm thinking I would maybe leave him on its exisiting food (I'm sure its a good one, but I didn't ask what kind) and give him time to adjust to that. Likely this is already a new food and it might be throwing off things a bit, also he's likely under alot of stress with all his new surroudings. Other than that he's doing well and seems happy. Any thoughts? Bland diet (if so what)?? Or leave him on his new diet and see if he adjusts say in the next week or so???

adding some canned pumpkin, just plain pumpkin, not the pie filling w/spices and sugar added helps make stools more solid and formed; i use it often; and, if i've got a dog i'm trying to get some wt off of i add it as filler so they don't feel hungry

12-24 hours of fasting, giving only water, ice cubes to lick or chicken broth -- this will allow the system to calm down. Then you can give: boiled hamburger and rice (be sure to rinse the hamburger to get all the fat off it) - about 1/4 to 1/2 cup every 2 -4 hours. Gradually increase. You want small meals to help settle the GI tract. You can also give - boiled chicken and white rice, oatmeal, baby food. Good luck to your friend.

Has the dog been checked for parasites or dewormed lately? Stress can indeed cause digestive problems but so can other things. How often is the dog pooping?

Unless the dog has a known chicken allergy, here's what I do:

Cook rice with DOUBLE the amount of water for twice as long as normal. When done the rice should be the consistency of mush.

Add sweet potatoes. I usually puree them raw and add them about half through the rice cooking.

Boil chicken breasts puree them and mix everything together.

I also add a tablespoon of pumpkin to each meal.

Thanks for your feedback, forgot about the pumkin
I'll send this thread to them which will hopefully help them out. Don't know he's been tested for parasites or wormed lately but they'll know.
