This question is for my NON-GSD. He is some large mix, we think Chow (b/c of his dense coat, black tongue, and eyes), retriever (shape of the body, head, and temperament), and herding breed (Aussie or Collie - based on seeing the mother). His coat has smooth, soft, long hair like a rough Collie or a Golden Retriever, but the entire coat is MUCH more dense than a Golden. Definitely comparable to the Malamute I dogsat last summer. Today I was trying to groom him in the yard, took off his flat collar (1" custom made Chicago Bears) and noticed he was starting to mat underneath it. For the summer I'd like to keep up with brushing and avoid matting and think something thinner would be nice. Is a rolled leather collar the best idea? Any other ideas? I suppose a fur saver would work, but we are still leash training Coke and he has to be on a tie-out with us in the yard b/c we have no fence. I guess I could get a fur save and have a second collar attached to the tie-out....just thinking as I type...

A rolled leather collar will not mar the coat
That is what I use on my coated GSD and when I take his collar off, you cannot see where it lays on his neck. I bought the Weaver rolled leather collar in 1"

I really like a rolled leather. I have a martingale, chain type rolled leather collar that I got at a dog show several years ago that I love. Second choice would be a buckled rolled or a fur saver.
