I came across this "throw chain" on the same page as Fur Savers.

Anyone know what it is for, how it is used?

Throw chains are used for various things. I had a trainer that used throw chains to make her dog stop barking in the crate. Unfortunately for my dog DeeDee who was in her crate next to the barking dog, my trainer had really poor aim.

I've always heard that the throw chain is used to make a "moderate" correction when your dog is doing something he shouldn't be doing.

For example, if you're on a nice loose-leash walk and your dog stops to sniff the ground, you take the chain and throw it at the dog so it hits the dog on its butt end, startling the dog (and inflicting pain, I'd imagine) to correct the behavior.

I have never used this method and personally don't like the idea at chucking a chain at my dog to stop an unwanted behavior. The way I throw, that's probably a very good thing.

Onyx breeder uses one to call her dogs off during herding training. It does work to distract them and is a way of correcting if they are getting too intense. She doesn't hit them with it, just throws near to distract.

Ah! Thank you all!

I have heard of throwing a chain on the floor by the dog to distract/correct them, but I didn't know it had to be a Herm Springer chain. I thought that any 'ole chain would do.

Hey, nothing but the best for our dog!
