Hello!
I recently bought a bag of Canidae Chicken formula for my pup. I noticed that the chicken formula has higher protein, fat and K-cal #'s than the orginal formula. However, the original formula has more named meat sources and is listed as a 5 star food on the "dog food analysis" website. The chicken formula is listed as a 4 star food on the same website.

I wrote to the Canidae company, but have yet to hear back from them on this question. Does the original All Life Stages have a higher meat content than the Chicken formula, and if so why does the Chicken have higher protein and fat content?

I wanted to try something else for my pup, she has been on Royal Canin, but I'm not 100% happy with the results.

Did I choose the wrong Canidae for my puppy?
If anyone who has experience with this food could lend me some info, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

the all life stages has the turkey meal and lamb meal along w/ the chicken meal. on the surface, it seems it would have more meat content. the higher protein in the chicken formula is probably due to protein sources other than the named meat in the food. just let your pup start the chicken formula and see how it goes. you could just switch to the all life stages formula after that.
either way, i think the switch from royal canin to canidae is a good idea if the canidae works for your pup. you should save $$ too, as canidae prices are very reasonable in most areas.

That one also has herring meal.

The chicken and rice is good for dogs that have allergies -- fewer ingredients to screw them up. So you feed the chicken and rice or lamb and rice.

I feed all three depending on what is in the store when I am buying the food.

But for pregnant bitches and weaning pups, I am going with the four meat sources:chicken, turkey, lamb, and herring.

Thanks for the replies..

So far, my pup loves the Canidae! She is a a tough pup (digestively speaking) and doesn't have any loose stool or gas when I switch her food or try something new. I gave her her regular food and the new food in seperate dishes and she ate the Canidae first and the RC after that. She has a healthy appetite! lol

I bought the small bag, 6. something pounds of the Chicken and Rice formula..when she if finished and all still seems well, I will switch over to the original multi-meat formula.

I remember when this product came out many years ago..I used to feed it to my Golden Retriever, I'm not sure why I haven't used it since, until now? It still seems like a very good product, ingredients wise.

If I hear back from the company on the meat content of their different formulas, I will post their response for you all!
