hi everyone, got my GSD almost 2 months ago. he is now 4.5 months old. same day i got him i went to the local petco to get food and one of the employees started talking to me. he told me is also a trainer on the side and also a rep for Nutro. my wife and i decided to pay him for 6 sessions to come to our house. i first purchased Bil Jac food because i didnt know any better and he was constantly telling me to buy nutro. i did alot of research and switched over to blue buffalo without telling him and when i did he was all disapointed telling me it wasnt very good etc. then the recall happened and i switched over to wellness after more research and have settled on that and Otto is doing great on it. well i went to petco today and saw him and told him i bought wellness this time and not nutro and again he was saying its not that good and that nutro guarantees a better coat etc etc.either he thinks im dumb or hes just lying to my face but all you have to do is look at nutros ingredient list and it looks like crap compared to wellness yet at the same price! and his name tag says hes the nutrition specialist there yet all he does is push nutro! he even tried selling me nutro for my cat which also had crap ingredients and told me that grain free was only good for my dog if he has allergies. so anyways now i gotta try to only go there when hes not there because its uncomfortable and i dont want him to come to my house anymore but i already paid him so0 this sucks. hes an older gentleman and has 7 dogs so i dont know how he cant see that nutro isnt that good or hes just being a salesman and taking me for a fool. but i dont think its right that hes there supposedly giving the best advice to customers for dog food yet all he does is push nutro on everybody, so i was wondering what you guys think or if you have dealt with this?? sorry for the ramble!

Well he might be a decent trainer regardless of his affiliation with any food company. And he honestly does believe it's the best food, but he should get off your back about it. Once the training sessions are finished you won't have to deal with him anyway.

it just seems like nutro is so overpriced with lackluster ingredients. dont think its right for petco to allow that

thats what ive seen, has amny ingredients that arent necessary for dogs. thats why its hard to believe petco allows him to be their nutrition specialist when he doesnt necesarrily give the best advice

He is being paid by Nutro not Petco, isn't he? Most food reps that are in stores are not employees of the store.

Yeah I actually work at Petco parttime and I highly doubt he would be allowed to work for both companies. However, I could be wrong. BUT I will say that it is VERY common for our food reps to walk around the store and act like they are employees.. It's weird.. We have a Blue Buffalo rep that walks around giving advice on all sorts of products. Its pretty annoying.

How annoying! That would turn me off big time. I would thank him for his advice, but be clear that you are happy with your choice of what to feed. Period.

If I'm at a pet store and a rep asks me what I feed, "Raw meat" as an answer is great to stop them in their tracks. :)

I say the same thing, Lucia and then bite my tongue as they try to push their crap food on unsuspecting pet owners.

He's being paid by Nutro. I used to be one of their "Pet Nutrition Specialists" before I knew any better. How ever the more I learned about the foods, the less I pushed the Nutro products. I started converting folks for wellness and similar brands. In the end I just quit, I felt like I was lying to people and that doesn't sit well with me.

BTW: They don't provide any formal nutrition training, they just give you a pamphlet with what they want you to tell people and have you memorize it.

lol, thats what i thought, i mentioned that i went to wellness because i wanted to put Otto on their grain free when he got a little older and he said thats only necessary if they have allergies and that corn etc is good for them, what a load of crap. i believe nutros 2nd ingredient is corn gluten meal so it makes sense, lol. but ya his nametag said nutrition specialist and i think its misleading in the least

Yeah it is. I don't feed the food, since my guys don't do really well with grains.

I agree that these 'nutritional' sales people are silly, there is an RC rep that is ALWAYS at the petsmart I go to (I am there every 3 days or so, for crickets and maybe a new toy) and she does a great song and dance, and I smile and nod. She is 'OMG SO experianced in GSDs' because her daughter has one, so I am usually double annoyed. When we switched food she told me to go back on it even though the dog is allergic to it because 'the local police squad feeds it'

 :hammer:

But that totally makes sense, right? Then again they're agenda is to sell, sell, sell. It's all for your pet's well being. -_-

If you are felling a little snarky the next time you see her, ask her how many Schutzhund dogs she's titled. Even odds she says, "What's that?" :)

he's a Nutro rep what do you think
he's going to push? if you don't want
him coming to your house tell him that
and ask him to pro rate the remainder of
the lessons. he might give you some
of your money back. if you start to feel
hassled by him call Nutro. don't feel
awkward about telling him you don't
want to continue the lessons with him
at your home. if he ask you why are you
discontinuing your lessons say "because
you suck and so does your product".
maybe you shouldn't say that but boy
oh boy if you did that's ROTFL funny.

I once fell for the Nutro Rep's spiel and bought Nutro Ultra, the dogs did ok on it, nothing bad happened to them, but they did make a lot more waste than on any other food. I stopped feeding it, because I tried to contact the company on many occasions and there was never anyone to answer the phone! Every time I called there was a message that said everyone was at a staff meeting. Bull**it!! If I can't speak to someone about the food I'm paying good money for, they don't deserve me as a customer!

:angryfire: Why is that people say they have so much experience with a certain breed because so and so has one? If you dont have the breed directly you cant say that and expect people to NOT look at your like you're stupid! UGH! I NEVER talked to the trainers or anyone in the pet stores unless i was looking for something specific back home. If they started pushing something else i told them i wanted a specific product and had no problem taking my business elsewhere. The pet stores here vary so much. One the employees deal with you when they have to. Which i'm fine with. Petsmart the employees are nice and the reps that show up arent allowed to act in any capacity other than what they are repping for. The employees are helpful and will help you search the entire store for what you're looking for. The trainers dont push techniques or anything on you. Makes me kinda nervous to move again and find a new pet store experience. I'll miss my favorite trainer and getting to see her Newfie pup!
