I was wondering if there is any way to tell if my rescue German shepherd is from German or American Lines. I Know they do DNA tests for mixed breeds theese days not sure if that would work for blood lines as well. What types of traits differ between the two lines?

Thanks everyone, we are very lucky to have been able to adopt him. I am enjoying watching him grow. He is the Demo dog for my class's at Petsmart, he gets alot of socialization that way. He is doing amazing with his training. He has such a strong work drive, but also becoming very affectionate. So sounds like hes American lines dose anyone know what are the major differences are anyways?

If you had a stacked picture of him that would be way more telling but to me based on the headshot he looks Am. showline because of the finer head and longer narrower snout. JHMO.

what is a stacked picture? more body ? I will post another picture with more of his body shape in it. Tonight we went to our Local German shepherd dog club to talk with some more experienced owners and of course socialize with all the beautiful shepherds. A few people commented thinking he was German lines, due to his super high energy and shape of his body, one lady said no one can tell if he is even purebred until he is full grown, but I think she didn't like the fact he is a recuse with no papers. What ever he is we love him, would be nice to have an idea tho, Thanks for all the feedback

here is a few more pics with more of his body in them

Nice tight feet and toes, more square body, nice moderate length ears that have rounded tips....yeah I feel *definately* some German lines in there....
He is a very well put together puppy IMO, nice tight ligature for his age and muscle development....while I love and defend my ambred lines lol Ambred puppies do not typical look like that at that age...they look very loose, all feet, very large ears.....just different. I do not see anything in this puppy in my experience that would make me think he has a lot of american lines in him.

Well now that I see his body I do tend to think he is less Am. Showline but still, it is a guess. I have seen a few less angulated Am. Showlines. How is his ball drive?

thanks for your input everyone. Wow Gunner is stunning, looks alot like Dexter. Dex has a very high toy drive loves to train, it seems no matter how much we do, training, playing, walking, swimming, going places and playing with other dog, we just can't seem to tire him out, hes always ready for more. Hes got alot of spunk, and is extremely brave, which makes me lean towards thinking he may have more German lines in him.
