My dogs have been on Metronidazole hundreds of times for diarrhea hundreds of times, and it has never caused incontinence. I don't think it is the medication
so what do you think it might be, he has been realy good for an 9 week old pup with going out side to go to toilet.
if it was a urinary infection would the med he is on help plus his wee looks like water there is no coulor to it.

I would call the vet and report it- maybe it's a side effect. Not everybody gets the same side effects from a medicine. I worry about fluid loss in a dog that's had diarrhea and now is doing what you describe, and that's why I think a call to the vet is in order. It could be unrelated, or could be he needs a different medicine- I dunno but your vet will.
Given how sick Ty has been, I'm thinking a urinary tract infection too. UTIs are often caused by fecal material getting into the urethra. Diarrhea often causes fecal to get where it shouldn't be on the skin and fur, despite our best efforts.

It could be a side effect of the metronidazole. This website lists incontinence as a side effect (for humans) http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/metronidaz_ad.htm. But side effects tend to be similar.

Either way, I would bring Ty to the vet as soon as possible.
I phoned up the vet today all he said was to see how much he is drinking and that he has never heard of this side effect before also it has been realy hot . So i am left with mopping the floors until then, (my floors have never been claener i have lost count how many times i have to mop them) and thank you all for your help
This is exactly what happened with Safir when he was on Prednisone a long time ago, but never on Metronidazole. I remember how I use to mop 10-15 times a day, so I feel your pain!
First of all, are you sure the dog has Giardia? I would agree that this dog could have a UTI, but as a secondary infection from the Flagyl. As with any antibiotic, Flagyl kills good bacteria as well as bad, which sets up a medium for secondary infection. What I would do here is to first find out what organism you are dealing with and treat that organism and not the symptoms. I would than give this dog some sort of probiotics (Fastrack) to get good bacteria into the system (yogurt is not enough, but helps) and than I would suggest fresh cranberries/juice in the diet.

Hope this helps,
Connie
Connie, it's not giardia, but Clostridium.

Ty's Mom, which vet is this? (didn't you bring Ty to two different vets?) I'm surprised that the vet just kind of dismissed you like that. If Ty hasn't been having any problems with housebreaking issues, and all of a sudden there's an issue, then I would think there's something wrong -- and not that it's just been really hot out. Maybe you need to bring Ty in to the vet's office, with a list of everything that is going on (food you've been feeding, how often he wets himself, how much water he's drinking, etc). Run a few tests to rule out UTIs and such.

Sometimes I find that it helps to bring a friend in with me (I bring my husband) to take notes so that we cover everything that the vet is saying and to make sure that I don't miss telling the vet everything. I'd start by printing up the website that I linked to above. Just because the vet hasn't heard of this side effect doesn't mean it can't happen. After all, Ty has been one sick little puppy. A lot can go wrong quickly when a little guy has been so sick.

That's what I'd do, anyhow.

3k9Mom~~thanks for sending me to the original thread. I have read the whole thing and I still go back to what I wrote above. Clostridium has many different strains and for each a different treatment modality. I would find out which the dog has and treat accordingly. I would still give probiotics and I would still give fresh cranberries/juice. You are correct...there are many questions to be answered before continuing or proceeding with further treatment. These little ones can crump in a NY minute.
i took him to the new one, i dont know what it was but he has just stop, he is asking to go out again. They did a test but found nothing.
and his poop is getting hard now. i just dont understand. I am still going back on tuesday just to be sure that eveything is ok.

Metronidazole can have some very severe effects on the central nervous system. To me, loss of control of unrination *might* be a symptom of a nervous system problem, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was a side effect.

Is he any more wobbly in the hind end? Or stiff? Change in tail carriage or overall attitude?
Ty is a little stiff on the back legs but i thought that was because i have hard flooring in my house down stairs.
He don`t like to sleep on the sofa or the dog bed as he gets to hot.
He is a lot more lively and happier in himself, and playing a lot more.
Just to let you Know that ty is ok, he gos for his 1st jad this friday then he is going to puppy class in 3 weeks time, all thats left to say is a big thank you to all that help Ty and myself.
