In the next few weeks, I'm going to be finishing a dog run on the side of my house. My dog isn't a digger (yet) but much of the existing fence already has a concrete barrier going a foot into the ground. It's going to be 6 foot wood fence, with a gate on each end. It's about 80' x 5' dimensions.

My question is what to do with the space once the fence is built. I'd love to put grass in there, as Fritz loves to lay and roll on grass, but between running new sprinkler lines and mowing the narrow space it just isn't going to happen.

Any suggestions for ground cover or vegetation that might improve it? What do your dog runs look like? My current plan is to put a layer of DG after making sure all the weeds are dead. But I'd love some other ideas.

Cedar chips are nice if your dog isn't sensitive to them. Cedar naturally repels insects, smells nice, and will keep mud to a minimum -- soak up water, which will keep your boy fresh instead of full of mud from running back and forth.
