Is this dog in a rescue, a shelter, or with an owner?

What are your expectations for this dog in terms of sociability? Safe containment? Future training?

What is your experience with dogs in general and GSDs?

What type of training methods were you thinking of employing?

Is this dog a good match for you and your lifestyle? Are their dogs who are a better match?

Lots of questions I would be asking myself for sure!

Jean asked tons of good questions which need to be answered.

However, adopting a Shepherd that may have bit someone, in my opinion is not a definate no.

Many of these dogs, tagged as aggressive, just need a nice enviroment.

And the above-mentioned comes from experience as a rescue guy.

I adopted a dog that was supposed to be put down because he bit the delivery guy in the rear (it was more like a nip but it broke the skin). He turned out to be the most wonderful dog and I had him for almost five years (got him at the age of 8 and had to put him to sleep at almost 13). He traveled with me everywhere and went with me to work too. I never had a problem with him around people, although he was somewhat protective of the house so I had to introduce him to the visitors properly.

Hi,

Perhaps a silly question, but have you met the dog?

If so, describe how he reacted to you-as an invited guest; tell us more about him.

If not, can you arrange a quiet meeting outside his territory?

thanks,
Mary Jane

I do rescue, as mentioned, but also have a high end European GSD, named Timber. The biggest problem with Timber is he will become very aggressive when suprised or when strangers come on my property.

But, to me, the incident you described is fairly normal. Of course, if the dog might bite someone, you are taking on a bit of responsibility.

Nonetheless, my hunch is you and the dog will be fine.
