Lily was no sooner rescued by GSRA on Thursday, then look who showed up on Friday. Owner turn in - gorgeous hunk Sampson. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him yet but Silvia says he is really nice and really BIG! (He appears really intact too.)

Hey guys, easy with that catch pole!

The Bladen County Animal Shelter is rescue friendly. They do gas when space is needed and the shelter is over-crowded now. Their hours are 8:30-11:00 M-F. They will arrange to meet you there at other times if you call during office hours and ask nicely. 910-862-6918. They cannot return long distance calls. Volunteers will help where they can.

Krista, I am in touch with someone who may be interested in Sampson.. Please find out what you can about him and let me know. Why was he turned in?

Re: Elizabethtown,NC - Sampson, male, gassing shelter

I have GREAT NEWS! Joanne (J & J Homeless Pet Rescue) put us in touch with another North Carolinian who made arrangements to adopt Sampson this evening. YEAH!

Thank you SO much, Joanne! Let's be sure she sends pictures! I'd love to see this guy 20 lbs. later. Can we leave Sampson here in Urgent till we know for sure he leaves with his adopter tonight? He can't afford to miss out on any exposure.

Thank you,
Krista

Hello everyone, I am Buddy's new Mom and a proud one at that. I will update everyone from time to time but for now know that he is extremely happy in his new home. We have learned that he is not friendly to other dogs but loves people. We have not tried children as yet but feel he will be friendly with them as well. He is a hunk of a dog if I do say so myself. I can not thank Joanne or Krista enough for all their help. I will update with pictures as soon as I figure out how to work this message board.

Hope - so glad you're here to keep us updated on Buddy! He's a beautiful boy and I think this was a match made in heaven!
Re: Elizabethtown,NC - Sampson, male, gassing shelter

Just an update on how Buddy is doing. We have decided to get a sibling for Buddy. We have had a home visit by one of the rescue groups here in NC and it went well. I have read everything everyone has offered here on the boards and appreciate all the advice and direction. So now we know that Buddy is dominate and we will need a submissive sibling. So I was wondering.....is it better to have a dominat dog or a submissive dog? My inexperienced thought was that the dominat dog would be more protective and a submissive dog would probably just lick the mugger to death. Anybody got any thoughts? I will keep everyone updated. I will try and post a picture of Buddy and me also.
Re: Elizabethtown,NC - Sampson, male, gassing shelter

I will try and load our picture. Stand back as he is one hunk of a fella!!!

Just checking to see if I can get picture loaded to show and not just the link like I had in previous post.

So now I see I have to learn to size it!!!

Re: Elizabethtown,NC - Sampson, male, gassing shelter

Hope - Buddy looks terrific! Just my opinion, but if I were looking for a sibling, I would pick a submissive female. But that's just me and hopefully some of the more expert people will post and give you some guidance.
Re: Elizabethtown,NC - Sampson, male, gassing shel

Buddy looks great.

The dominance/submission thing doesn't necessarily translate to people. Sometimes dogs can be very dominant with other dogs and submissive with people. I don't think one or the other is better as a companion and as a protector I think just having a big dog deters people from bothering you! Rafi would just as soon lick someone to death but people cross the street when they see me coming down the sidewalk with him.

I would recommend enrolling Buddy in a good positive obedience class so that he gets some experience with other dogs in a controlled environment. Then you will get a much better idea of what type of dog will be a good match for him.

You will also be able to pick up some good tips on integrating a new dog into the pack and see if Buddy is better with younger dogs, older dogs, etc.

And I often recommend an omega dog and not a beta dog for a very dominant dog.
