Any tips? Lilly's is completely torn, surgery next week. No arthritis, which is good. Trying to keep her settled until surgery so the added stress to the other side doesn't blow it, as well.

Well, that's how I will spend my Christmas vacation!!!

My previous male GSD, Lugar, blew out his ACL completely at 5 y/o. I was directed to a surgeon who specialized in this type of surgery (NOT a regular vet who thinks they know-it-all). So I would recommend that you take Lily to a specialist. ALSO! My surgeon put a metal splint on Lugar's leg immediately after surgery and kept it on for 2 weeks minimum. That was KEY to his operation to heal properly. Without that split it would've been impossible to keep his leg still and not to twist it.

Our neighbor had the same thing happen to her big dog and she took him to a general vet who did not put on a split. The dog never had a chance to heal that leg properly and forever had problems.

Lugar was fine once he healed. I think it was about 4 months once he was back to normal. We were advised by the surgeon to NOT throw tennis balls because the stopping abruptly on his knee to grab the ball was not good for that knee or his good one. She said swimming was GREAT for him. He LOVED to swim. So we threw the ball out in the ocean/lake and he could get his tennis-ball-fix that way. Here is an old picture of my boy. God, I miss that big guy.

Omy had the surgery when she was about 9 yrs old and did very very well. Was still active, although a little creaky when she hit 11 yrs. No splint, just rested. Good luck!

Thank you. Yes, after going through a hip replacement with my other dog, I am only going with an orthopedic surgeon.
I am narrowing it between two surgeons. Both excellent, both have operated on dogs of friends, all with great results. Also, a $1300 price difference between surgeons.
Thank you again.

My dog just had a plate put in to repair her torn ACL 2 weeks ago, and got her soft cast off yesterday. The most challenging thing was helping her go to the bathroom because we had to use a sling to hold up her back end. I'm sure your baby will be just fine- just remember to be really patient, the whole process of handling a limping dog for two weeks can take its tole. :) Good luck!
