In August 1943 an Army Air Corp B-17 on a training flight from a base near Walla Walla, Washington, crashed near High Ridge Lookout Tower, on the Umatilla NF. The crew was killed. There was a small fire that was seen the Lookout.

The crash site is in the North Fork of the Umatilla Wilderness. Pike and I thought it would be a good early Fall hike.

The morning hike in was slow paced and easy and the smell of the forest was nice. Pike found a tree probably snapped off during one of the thunderstorms this summer:

Following some anecdotal directions, we found the crash site about a mile and a half from the car.

A quiet and solemn place.

A Veterans group has placed a memorial at the seventy-nine-year-old site.

Pike says it is time to turn back to the car.
