My GSD is 9 months old. He went from playing and running like a normal puppy one night to waking up fine and then after breakfast looking a bit wobbly on his hind legs. By night he could barely walk and needed to rest after every few steps. Thats was Wednesday. Thursday there was no change.

Today we needed to use a towel to help support him when he wanted to walk. Like for bathroom needs.

I took him to the vet today. They did a series of xrays and they can not determine whats wrong. His spine looks good, legs look good, he did not see signs of pano in the xray (he did say that doesn't mean he does not have it, but it's unlikely both back legs would be affected at once.) and his hips look fine.

He gave him a steroid shot and wants me to call in the morning to see if it helped. The xrays are also being sent to the ortho vet who looked at his front leg when he was having problems with it. That was pano.

So, does anyone have any thoughts on what could be wrong?

Disc problem would be my first guess. It would not be seen on X-ray, only MRI. I would go to a neurologist. If he has slipped a disc you are working against the clock. The longer you wait the less chance of meaningful recovery.

Wow he is a young one :( I hope he will be ok. I wouldn't even want to guess on something like this. I just wanted to wish you luck and health to your pup.

I agree with GSDSAR. Have an MRI done immediately.

I was thinking similar. Def a vet neurologist referral......myelogram may be done first to localize area for MRI. I hope he turns out ok. Prednisone is definitely a first line defense if there is damage and swelling. Crossing fingers for you.

Maybe something neurological? Was that ever brought up?
No, I need to call tomorrow to let him know if the shot helped.

The xrays are being sent to Animal Specialty and Emergency Center - Specialty Veterinary HospitalASEC, Los Angeles, CA 310-473-1561 . I'm sure they will want to do additional tests. I need to wait and see what they say. I can't get an MRI done tonight anyway.

I just wish I knew what was wrong with him.

Diane. YES search the pup for ticks all over if you have not, one tick can cause tick paralysis. I forgot about that but remember seeing a case when I was a teen working at the humane society. One day after tick removal dog back to normal. ONE tick. It has to be attached for 5 or more days I think.

I do hope he is ok. So young to have any serious problems! Thinking about you today <hugs>

Yes, run a tick test. One day my German Shepherd fell over and could not walk. Long story short, he had a very bad infection of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. He recovered after months of doxycycline.

Could be a spinal embolism.

Hope it's something simple.

no not tick tested. We don't go into the mountains with him and where we live we don't get any ticks or fleas here.

As of Tuesday he was walking really well. They had him on steroids. He is having other, what I think are unrelated issues, now with his digestive track.

There has been blood work, barium x-rays done exploratory surgery and biopsies. He spent last night at the vets on an IV and he will be there for the next 24 to 48 hours. They are not sure what is wrong. They are going over all the tests and results they have with an internal medicine specialist. He's almost 10 months old. The vet said this is a very serious issue in a dog so young. I hope they find out whats wrong with him soon and it can be treated.

blood work came back normal with the exception if calcium which was high. This could be because he has pano or it can be an indication of cancer.

Biopsies are not back yet. They were taken from the stonach and small intestine.

The barium xrays showed an irritated small intestine and stomach. (He had been vomiting a lot of white foam and clear mucus when we took him to the emergency vet, who could not treat him because they were closing, so we ended up at our regular vet. We had to wait 20 minutes for them to open. The longest 20 minutes of my life.) The barium did go all the way through, with that and the surgery they found no blockage.

They gave me the condition of all his organs, intestines and stomach. I will not list them all, but they are very concerned about the spleen. It is very abnormal, enlarged, and not in the proper position. They did not remove it because he is so young and an enlarged spleen could be an indication of an underlying condition.

He came home briefly last night. I gave him a very small amount of water and he was pacing again, gagging and eventually threw it up. This should not have happened because they gave him a shot to settle his stomach. So, they wanted him right back and he went on an IV. He is still there.

I'm a very worried pet parent.

Sorry things are still not looking to great...Just wanted to add, doesn't matter if you hike or not. TICKS and FLEAS are everywhere.. The ticks that pass on tick disease, are so minute, you'll never find them ..If you can't find them how would one know they were bitten?

It is still worth it to tick test him in my opinion, since your not getting results from anything else..
