8 month old male seems to be small and not really growing

My puppy was growing quickly as expected but now at 8 months old he's seemed to have slowed down quite a bit. He's only 57 pounds and when I weighed him 6 weeks ago he was 54 pounds. In general he seems small for his age but also based on the chart averages online. Some things to note:
  • He's not vomiting ever
  • He has A LOT of energy
  • He is scarfing down his food, eating a lot of protein, and is having about 3,000 calories per day
  • His dad is about 100lbs and all the males in his bloodline are about that size as well
  • I was exercising him a lot on a daily basis but I've slowed that down the last 2 weeks hoping that will help
I'm wondering if this seems out of the ordinary or not and if he will still likely get to be a similar size to his dad (100lbs) or if this means he will likely be a much smaller dog. Some online sources comment that dogs at 8 months are 85% of their adult size and other sources say German Shepherd keep growing until they're about 2 years old to get to full size.

Any info is helpful! Thank you!

Well he’s definitely not going to a hundred pound dog. Nothing wrong with that. You should be feeding based on the dog in front of you, not some chart online. You should feed to maintain proper body condition. If you embark him, it will give you a predicted adult weight, which is generally pretty close from what I’ve seen.

Nova was 63lbs at 8 months old. Around 8 months is when her growing slowed, she plateaued for awhile and then slowly began gaining weight again.

She will be two this month, I weighed her back in January and she was 71lbs. I think she's still slowly filling out.

If your pup is healthy I wouldn't stress over his growth, just keep an eye on his body score and general health.

All I can add is I agree completely with Bearshandler and Bchevs. These are reasonable and intelligent answers. My Gracie just turned one year old and is 57 lbs. Her parents at the breeder were both in their mid 80 lbs. Had her to the vet just last Friday for her one year check-up and boosters. The doctor was very pleased with her health. She believes despite the heavier weight of the parents, Gracie could just be just a smaller version, maybe make it to 65 or 70lbs once she fills out.

As much as I was looking forward to a larger size, I love the heck out of her and her energy. I just feed and work her based on "the dog I see in front of me". As long as your little one is healthy with no issues, that's all you should be concerned with.

How tall is he? What is his bone structure, heavy vs light? How do you know his sire was 100 lb? Why do you need him to be 100 lb,
for visual deterrence purposes?

My current dog was always light, about 70 lb at 1 yo I think. He’s over 3 yo, just took him to the vet and was stunned to learn he’s 87lb. Still shows last 2 ribs, still is as agile as a cat, doesn’t eat a lot, became somehow wider though. My neighbor believes he’s 110 lb :)

Keefer's perfect adult weight was exactly 80 pounds. Someone once guessed him as being 115 pounds! 😆 People are just really bad at guessing dog weights, lol.

I wonder if that "about" 100 pound sire actually IS 100 pounds, and if that's a lean healthy weight for him. Even if it is, what about the dam of the litter? She'll influence his size too. There's also variation within a litter, Cava is around 20 pounds less than her two sisters, smaller still than her brother, and 8-10 pounds less than the Embark guess of what her adult weight would be, which is actually right about what her dam weighs. Who knows why? I'm very happy with her smaller size, that's exactly what I was hoping for.

I have 2 unaltered adult male GSD that are 35 pounds apart, sounds weird just writing that.
Perfect (for me) would be closer to the middle of them, I like a solid 90 pound male for my lifestyle but they're both perfect in their own ways and healthy, which is the most important.
I don't feel 57# at 8 months is small. that seems right on target to be a 70-75# adult when fully mature. Seger was 65# at 1yr, his trialing weight at the height of his career was about 78#. Retired he's about 72. And he's 25.5" tall. He's not a small dog at all.

Same. My female is nearly 11 months old and is 53lbs. She is active, hungry and healthy. Vets have told me she could do with putting on some weight (5lbs) so I am trying to do that but I don’t expect her to grow to the size of my last female who was around 70lbs.
