Jackson man gets 7 years for killing pet dog with hammer

A Superior Court judge today cited a convicted killer's extensive criminal record when he sentenced the 37-year-old Jackson man to seven years in state prison for killing his pet cocker spaniel last year with a hammer.
Judge James Den Uyl imposed the extended prison term on Dennis Robinson, 37, for the animal cruely he inflicted an Abbie, his 5-year-old cocker spaniel, on March 25, 2007.
Witnesses said he beat and kicked the pet, and then flung it against the wall of his trailer in the Maple Lake Campground in Jackson.
Then, according to Robinson's admission in court on May 6, he crushed the dog's skull with a hammer.
The maximum term for cruelty involving the death of an animal is five years in
prison, but Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Michael Weatherstone argued for an extended term forRobinson based on his prior criminal record, which started when he was 13 and included a conviction for aggravataed manslaughter.
Robinson served 5 1/2 years of a 15-year term he was given in 1992 for the fatal
stabbing of a Tinton Falls man, Joseph LoBosco.
Weatherstone, in arguing for the extended prison term in the animal cruelty case,
said Robinson has only been out of prison for 4 1/2 years his entire adult life.
"He has shown absolutely no ability to live within the rules and norms of society,"
Weathersone said. "What this defendant did to Abbie was despicable."
Den Uyl ordered that Robinson serve 3 1/2 years of the prison term before he can be considered for release on parole.

In my opinnion, they should of done the same thing to him that he did to that poor dog. The Laws for animal abuse is to lax. Things have to change. But I must admit here in Canada, they probably would of received a small fine and banned from owning a pet for a few years. I hate hearing stories like this.

How scarey is it that people like that walk, shop, drive, and live amongst us. It definitely makes me want to be more aware of who is doing what in my own neighborhood. (As opposed to hiding in my house!)

He should have still been in prison for killing that person. He wouldn't have had the opportunity to kill the dog.

Moongazer that is what I am thinking. He was already in jail, has been in and out of jail, why not just leave him there? Obviously any attempts at rehab are not going to work on this person.

I think they should have the death plenalty/life in prison for murdering/beating an animal. Murder is murder and assault is assault to me, doesnt matter if its a person or a pet. Usually after someone treats an animal badly, they move onto people too.

Is this the harchest punishment to date for cruelty to animals? I think it is worth it, especially his record. The sad part is that our tax dollars will pay for him over the next 7+ years.
