Lightbulb Becoming a Dog Trainer - Help!

Good morning, folks!

I'm the proud dog dad of a GSD-husky mix dog. He's been a handful from day one, and I've trained him extensively (I took a K-9 training course for 6 weeks with him, and I work with him every day at home).

Recently I decided to see if it is a feasible option to take classes to actually become a dog trainer and train dogs as a living (or at the very least to make extra income), and I have no idea as to where to start, what certifications may be necessary, etc. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? I'm open to all advice and tips.

I've considered:
1) Contacting the company that I paid when I did the k-9 course with Icarus, my dog, to see if they offer courses to become a trainer.
2) Contacting the local police station to see if they can provide any insight as to dog training, since they have working dogs
3) Posting in this forum is my last resort for now, as I really have no idea how to get started with this. I have experience training my dog (and my neighbors' dogs on occasion), as well as training sea lions (I majored in marine biology and used to work at a zoo).

I'd really like to combine my love for animals with something that I think I would enjoy, AND get paid to do it while helping folks with difficult animals. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Lots of alternatives out there for classes or training, but here's a good web site to begin with...

Find a good trainer to apprentice under. Get involved in dog sports to learn more about the breeds and different training methods. Find a local AKC club and join. Or an IPO club.

It takes more than a 2 week course to be a dog trainer. It takes experience and talent.
wolfy dog and sebrench like this.
