Aha Moment! My trainers methods worked!

So Ruby and I have been working on passing the CGC. Our biggest hurdle has been the 'meet & greet' with other dogs. We are fine in class with 8 - 17 other dogs (go figure) but once we are on the road or sidewalk all bets are off.... until this week.

Method: My trainer had me walk with Ruby in a heel position, always in a heel position. "Nope" then check with prong if she broke the heel. Last class she stayed in heel without any corrections. We stopped using prong day after last class. After 4 days of walking with her in heel, martingale collar, leash loose 'J,' end hanging over neck, she stays in heel. All I have to say is 'nope' if she is even thinking about breaking the heel. She corrects herself.

This morning this method was tested. A hyper small dog at the end of its retractable leash and barking passed us in other direction across street. Ruby was interested, but did not break heel. She did not bark or lunge. Soooo happy!!!!!

Congratulations. I know your frustration and elation. Rommel passed his AKC S.T.A.R. puppy test in June (how I don't know). He is great with everything but the stay command (he is so Velcro). I can get the required 5 feet away with minor whining and grumbling but he will stay. Anything beyond that is a no go right now. So you are way ahead of us. Good job Ruby.

YES!!! Training works!!! But you have to give it time and consistency, as you have. Congrats for you and Ruby for a job well done!

I've tried soooo many different techniques. I now think being consistant & telling her what I expect is the way to go. Oh and being patient & calm..... that's the hardest.

That's wonderful, and so encouraging to me. I know your frustation, and while we are improving, we are working to experience the elation of success.
