Dare I Say... Petsmart Training!!

Hello All,

My year old German Shepherd/ Australian Shepherd is still a bit hectic. We have done at home training, but have yet to gone and done obedience training. Her behavior so far has warranted her to be more of an outdoor dog, but we would prefer her indoors. I was wondering if Petsmart offers good training services. One fairly near us has amazing reviews for the trainers there, but I am wondering if it will offer quality results. We just want our pup to have her indoor manners, and get over her fear of strangers.

Thanks!

It depends on the trainer. I have gone through all three levels of training for three of my dogs there. My trainer is great and I traveled an hour to go back to her. Lots of peoe don't care for the training there, but again it depends in the trainer.

Oh okay! Thank you. Now considering it is Petsmart I assume the prices are "right". From your experience there have you found the price okay?

Yes. Comparable to some and less then most. A GSD club is the best value. I pay $75 a year for both my GSD's. I haven't found anything that beats that. My trainer at Petsmart goes to the GSD club for Correctionals for her Rotts. All the trainers there know her. Good trainers are known throughout the training community and most of them know each other or heard of each other.

llombardo's on point. I work as a trainer at a Petsmart currently. Some trainers are great, some are terrible. It all depends on where you go. You can always stop by and watch a class taught by a trainer you are interested in to get a feel for whether or not you like them before you commit to a class. I always invite people who are not sure about my classes to stop by and watch me train.

I am a member of a local AKC obedience club. I pay $40/hour for private training when I want it. That's about half what Petsmart charges.

I've gone through all the PetSmart classes with my Yorkie when she was younger, and now I'm on the last course of the PetCo classes with my German Shepherd. It definitely depends on the trainer, though I've been fortunate enough to have good ones . my current trainer absolutely adores Kody and helps us a lot. He too is learning to become an indoor dog at 2 years old, although now it's a bit more difficult now tat we have our non-crate trained Yorkie over here

I learned this the hard way - your dog will not learn indoor manners if you keep her outside. I was overwhelmed by my dog as a puppy, but I started keeping him on the leash in the house and being more strict and consistent with him. He really improved quickly. I also did some one-on one with a trainer, and took 3 classes with him.

I have taken classes at PetSmart with other dogs (not my GSD) and thought they were useful. I have taken classes with a few trainers with my GSD - some classes were useful and some weren't. I agree it all depends on the trainer more than the place. Good luck!
