Shaping the perch- handler role

We are currently working on this and my question is how should I deal with what I think is Zeke becoming frustrated with the exercise. He will offer every other behavior he knows, I mark-reward his eventual movement towards the perch object. He will put one foot on- M/R-and then I wait for more...he then offers all behaviors and eventually lies down on the book and barks/whines at me. What is my next move? Currently I am moving the object and starting over after prolonged high pitched barking; Thanks for any and all insight

I would lure him forward with food or a toy to take just ONE more step - or even just an attempt to move forward, and mark and reward that.

If you don't want to lure, I would mark and reward numerous times for the one foot. Then wait and see if the more value changes his tune.
