Suggestions on when to start clicker training!

Hello everyone, first time post but long time lurker.. My Puppy was just born last Sat 6/15 so i dont even have my puppy yet, but am learning as much as i can before i bring him home. My question is this. What age would u start clicker training? I am pretty sure im going to enroll my puppy in a basic obedience class that starts when he will be 13weeks old. Im not sure what type of training they will promote except its positive reinforcement. Should i wait on clicker training till these classes start and just enjoy my puppy? Dont want to confuse my puppy either. I really wanted to start training right away but im no expert . I Havent trained a puppy in 13 yrs! Thanks for your suggestions and such a tremendously valuable website!!

You can start working with the clicker as soon as you bring your puppy home. Like Shanna said, just remember to keep the sessions short. We brought Thor home at 8 weeks and he could "sit" and "wait" within a couple of days, thanks to clicker training.

Paula
Shasta - GSD (4/30/10)
Thor - GSD (3/12/12)
RIP Duchess - Shetland Sheepdog (12/25/88 - 2/14/04)

ASAP! When i brought Celia home (1 year ago today x3) the very first day she learned to sit, lay down, and give me her paw all thanks to clicker traning! Now she knows well over 100 different cues! Th sooner you start training, the faster and better they learn! I can teach celia a trick in a day know because she can learn so much faster from early and continuous training. Yesterday she lerned how to consistantly put a quarter in a coin jar within 10 mins. no joke. While my friends GSD who had no early training what so ever, has a hard time learning any cue, same goes for my other friends lab/gsd mix. Earlier you train, the faser tey learn and the better behaved they will be. Clicker training is so much fun to! Im obsessed with it. Im constantly teaching new tricks to celia.

You have an advantage because you do NOT have your puppy and can use the time to really read up and prepare!

Tons of teeny treats!

Hungry puppy!

CHARGE THE CLICKER before you start training.

SHORT SHORT sessions with lots of play.

Learn what the heck 'shaping' means!

Never used a clicker-don't like them-just something else to have to hang onto and have the same results using voice and play. Trained many a dog and horse.
