Question The ckc in my area will not let us train with a prong collar!

We recently joined the ckc(Canadian Kennel Club) in our area to do more obedience and other activities and they told us "no prong collar are allowed". I am a little disappointed because I've always trained with it! I guess it's time for a change!

Secret Power

I'm sorry. I disagree with their rules...and would defy them. I even used my prong in Petsmart class.
I understand during trials they poo poo the prongs for competitors and I completely agree. I completely disagree during training...

well here you can get the "boot" off of show grounds (akc) If you have a prong collar on your dog, you dont even have to be competing.

I imagine the ckc is rather like the akc in that regards since they are saying no prong collars in training class.

One can disagree, but to defy them, well you (general you) would be setting yourself to get banned / removed from the grounds, whatever they decide to do.

Ya, he might not want to defy them if he wants to make friends in the CKC world... Maybe a martingale

Thanks Diane, didn't think of it that way.

well personally I think it's ridiculous as well, most likely they don't like prongs because the "look' nastier than a choke..martingale would be a good choice

I really like that collar and want one for home!! But training classes and other activities are rare in my area I wouldn't want to get kicked out! This is going to be a fun hobby for the three of us!

My breeder told us that the CKC in her area(Sault Ste Marie) allow prongs. I thought all CKC across Canada had the same rules ?

I cannot find anything in the Canadian Kennel Club rules that prohibits prongs (or any other collar) on show grounds. They are not permitted IN the ring but there is no rule against them on show grounds. I've seen them there on dogs without repercussion.

The local club (who may be a member club of the CKC) may have different rules.

Not sure if I should start training Molly with a flat collar before we start with them? I am just hoping she doesn't act like a wild horse when entering the class for the first time. With the prong a have total control and confidence that she will be well behaved!
