Dog working for handler, because he wants to?

My dog, moderate prey drive...likes the toy but will not move heaven and earth for it, moderate food drive. At home, at a park, around other dogs, all I have is some dog meat...and he will give me constant eye contact, offer me positions and wag his tail and actually push me for more obedience. He is 11 months old, workingline shepherd...did I get lucky? he does not need to be bribed, and although he gets a reward...frankly it seems to me, he just wants to work, period. I thought a dog that wanted to do obedience for his handler was a myth! ...my question...genetics obviously play a part in this but.....is it my training that encouraged him to be this way? or is it just him? I have another dog, a showline bitch, high food drive and high prey drive, and she will work for me, uninterested, head low, no "oommph" with food.....present a ball and she will do anything, take it away, and I may as well be a statue...my training? genetics, or both? Thanks.

I would say both, and your relationship with your dog

I feel it is genetics and the pack drive that makes a dog biddable. I have 3 GSD's and only one has this trait strongly. I know the breeder focused on that among other traits when choosing the breeding match.

It sure does make for a happy joyful team when you are able to get a dog like this!!
