Training with multiple dogs

This might be a silly question, but what do you do with the other dogs when you try and do training with one.

A little example last night I bought a plastic stool, when I came home all the dogs wanted to see what it was I put it on the floor and everyone sniffed it, I tapped the stool thinking one of the small dogs would get on it, instead Hawkeye put his paw on it of course I said "touch" good boy and asked him to touch again and he did, again I praised him but by this time all the other dogs wanted to play and get all crazy, I would have liked to try again with Hawkeye to see if he'd touch it again, but the other dogs wouldn't even let him get near it.

Sometimes it would be nice to just train on the spot for 2mins instead of training always being such a formal event.

Chelsea (Boxer):April 21/08
Austin (ShihTzu):August 2/02

I crate them real quick, baby gate them out of the room, or if I'm out and about, I put one in a down stay away from me.

Same. I either crate, or I take the dog i'm working with outside with me and leave the others inside.

Everyone else is crated or kenneled, while I take the trainee to dog class, the driveway, uptown, whatever.

I think that training IS formal. But I also think that we have millions of training possibilities that just happen, whether other dogs are present or not. Baby gates are good too, but I learned early on that when I try to formally train in my house, the other dogs will be crying and moaning because I am paying attention to the one, and it is hard to get anything done. I have a nice field in my back yard that could be for training, but the dogs in the kennels will be barking and carrying on until it is no fun at all.

Raven only fell for the crate once and was performing the commands in the crate as I was working with Kaiser (she got treats tossed her way occasionally). The next night she wouldn't go near the crate when it was training time so I had to trick her to the other side of the baby gate.

Back in the days when we were all practicing regularly, I used to use two of the dogs as posts and figure eight around them.

I need to do this. I feel so bad for the dog I am not training (at the moment), but everything I have read is clear that this is the way to go.

I absolutely don't allow whining when I'm training someone else. Frag's the only whiner as a GSD, and if he doesn't stay quiet, he's removed further away which he hates more. It's not about being convenient for him, it's about being convenient for me. I want to train HERE, in the moment, and he has to take my commands and FOLLOW them. I didn't ask for him to be whining in his down stay.

Only way he gets to come back is if he's quiet.

Would you like to come over to Emmett and help me with my whiny dogs?
My little poodle Chevy screams when I come home or when I get up in the morning (in his crate and out of it), never could stop this, now Harley is doing it too. It sounds like I'm killing them! Help!

I crate the dog I'm not working with in the bedroom (close the door, the radio drowns out any sounds in the rest of the house), or put him/her in the garage pen so I can have some one on one time with the other dog.
