Ongoing Socialization - How often?

Hi all,

So for older puppies and adult dogs, how often do you continue to socialize?

I know during the first couple months socialization is huge and should be done daily if possilbe.

Now, that my puppy is 10 months, and was well socialized, I'm now wondering what is ideal for adults. Still daily socialization? weekly?

once they are well socialized as pups won't they remain social since they learned good habits at a young age? thanks

Funny you should ask that- I just took Stosh to my office to walk around and greet everyone, then to the vet's office just to sit in the waiting room, get weighed and scam a few treats. We just started back at obedience school last week but I think it's important to get him out and comfortable in lots of settings.

My pup is almost 8 mos. and I just took him to the vet's office too for a weigh in and a dog treat. Decided to get micro-chipped while we were at it. He was a perfect gentlemen except for one little low growl. He has not be there since before we started training. Have also taken him to Petsmart and the feedstore withing the last few weeks. I think that it is probably important to do this every now and again to remind them how to act around other people, dogs, etc.

thanks again all

Well we have class one night a week but I try to get him out somewhere at least once a week even if it's just to the pet store. Some weeks it's more often. I'm lucky enough to be able to take him to my office, our local mall lets me walk him there before it opens so he sometimes gets out s few days a week. I work primarily from home so it's good for me too, otherwise I'd be happy to be a hermit

gotcha. thanks stosh.

i walk them around chicago 3 times a day, but i don't know if that is really socialization or just exercise. they probably only get pet by a stranger once a week on all those walks. they pass by many many people...

YES it's socialization. Animal socialization is NOT the same as people socialization. It's not about interaction, it's about EXPOSURE!!

Seeing, hearing, smelling new things is all part of socialization. They don't have to be touched, or frolic with every stranger for you to be doing something valuable with your walk beyond exercise.
