Discipline?

Well I have a 3 yr old lab mix and have been around dogs my whole life. But I'm not sure how to discipline Dakoda. My lab mix and every other dog I've had respond to just using a serious, unhappy tone (never yelling, just talking unhappily). They immediately respond. But Dakoda doesn't respond to that and I don't know how to discipline her. A neighbor said to just slap her, but I am NOT going to slap a dog. Any ideas on how I can let her know things aren't acceptable?

Just typical puppy stuff. Biting too hard, chewing on furniture, etc. Nothing extreme. She just doesn't care about getting in trouble by vocal command lol. She's a good puppy, just gets into that puppy mischief.

Usually an AH AH and a redirection or ignoring/leaving her should work.

That's how I show displeasure for all of the dogs I train and own.

I've tried alot of vocal commands, and she just freezes, looks at me, barks, then does it anyways. It's actually really funny haha.

Have you heard about NILIF (nothing in life is for free).

This one here has some very good information too.

It's not enough to tell a GSD "No", you have to give them something to do instead.

The verbal negative like "No" or the sharp "Eh Eh" noise is only supposed to interrupt the behavior, not stop it. Then you show them something you want them to do.

For example...the biting. Goes for hands? EH-EH!! Bring out tug and play with her with that so she learns something better to put her mouth on.

Chewing on furniture? Interrupt with the noise and give her a bone, or a Kong, or a Carrot...whatever, as long as it's appropriate to chew on.

So on and so forth. If she gets too wound up...then take her outside and let her run off some of her energy. Tired puppies are good puppies. She keeps persisting? Crate. Because Mommy can't deal with you right now...

Thank you Mrs. K!
JKlatsky-- I already give her toys with the biting. She tends to just drop them after a minute and go back to what she was doing. Very stubborn. Haha. She hasn't been in the crate yet at all, maybe I'll try that too

She's only two months old, she doesn't even know what they mean! Take a look at the links Mrs. K provided - lots of good info there.

For a young puppy like that I like to think of "discipline" in terms of rules and structure, not punishment. It's not fair to punish a puppy for not knowing what's expected of her.

BTW, your neighbors advice of slapping her is about the worst thing you could possibly do. You don't want her to fear you or become hand-shy.
