Purely Positive training from companion to competition by Sheila Booth is a great book, chapters on puppy foundation training, too. The Michael Ellis DVD's from Leerburg look awesome, you can view clips on Leerburgs site.

I used to swear by the Monks of New Skete books, who raise and train German Shepherds. I can't recall so much about them now!!!

Agree with Jane. I highly recommend Michael Ellis's first dvd: "The Power of Training Dogs with Food". His other two (Tug and Heeling) are great as well but the first one is fantastic, especially for foundational training.

The Monks of New Skete "How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend"
Turid Rugaas "On Talking Terms with Dogs", "My Dog Pulls", "Barking".
Kevin Behan "Natural Dog Training"
These authors also have websites and dvds.

Best thing is to locate classes and instructors in your area. Then you have the eye/experience of someone who's trained hundreds of dogs (and their handlers) right there to give instant feedback and assistance. Along with the necessary socialization and distractions that are built in.

Once you find good dog classes, the instructor can also recommend books/DVD's that worked for them.
