Hmmm... what to do.

I just brought the big wooly beast home yesterday. I realize he needs time BUT he barks like mad whenever he's in the crate and Denali is out.
I'm a little torn on what to do. I suppose I could put him in the bedroom when it's Denali's turn out of the crate, but then wouldn't that be separating him from the family?
Also, how long are one of your rotations?

Thanks for any advice .

Re: Hmmm... what to do.

Why don't you put both dogs on leashes until they are used to one another?

I would ignore the barking and reward when he's quite. He'll get the idea.

What big woolly beast? Are you fostering or adopting?

Re: Hmmm... what to do.

Some Breeder told me that the crated dog can be jealous of the loose dog and that is not good either. Maybe he wants to play with her? Do you know if he likes other dogs?

Re: Hmmm... what to do.

I put them both on leashes last night and he would bark bark bark LOL. So then Denali thought she should join in and she barked like twice. She's usually a mute.
I can only do the leash thing when BF is home though because they're both so strong and I can only contain one at a time hehe.
That's why I have to crate one. Both crates got moved to the living room but due to his barking, I moved one back into the bedroom and they'll have to take turns I guess unless someone can give me a better idea!

He does the whole play bow thing and he licks her crate a lot so he's ok but I'm not taking any chances. In my past experiences, when I thought the dogs were going to be fine, Denali got attacked so, until I'm 100% comfortable with him, he's not going to be off leash or near her unless they are walking together. On walks, they're both pretty good when walked together except for wanting to play hehe.
In about 2-4 weeks I might let them romp off leash in a field but not in the house.

So far, he counter surfs, steals everything off the floor and any low tables, mouths me when I'm brushing him, doesn't have any basic obedience, is oblivious to my corrections. LOL Hmm... this sounds like Denali all over again!

Thanks very much, I'm very happy. Even though in 1 day, he's already managed to be THE messiest dog I've ever had.
He is an LC Sable but the only thing LC about him atm are his ear tufts. His coat is yucky and dry and I think someone hacked it off. Plus he smells like poopy kennel so it's off to the groomers with him.

I do have some pictures, I know the Petfinder one is horrible. I thought he was going to be a midget shepherd but "wooly beast" fits him perfectly. He's the biggest goofball ever.

Re: Hmmm... what to do.

Dogs bark not easy to stop them. Is he barking less since the move to the bedroom? If he does not see her he can still hear her having fun. He probably just wants to join in.

Good Luck and I so hope it all works out between the two.

Re: Hmmm... what to do.

I'm pretty sure it's exactly that. He's not barking in the bedroom but he'll whine a little. I don't blame him for barking.
Being fresh out of the shelter, I'm sure he I've got to give him time to realize he's not going to be bored everyday. Still, I don't like the idea of them playing together yet.
Maybe when he's more adjusted and they get used to each other.
