I'm a bad puppy mommy

For the last week and a half, Mandi will cry when I have her in the crate (mostly overnight) and she has to go out. She will only give me about 5 minutes warning, so I know I need to get up then and go.

Last night I let her out and put her in the crate. Then I went on to bed. She whined and I told my husband that she makes that sound when she needs to go out, but since she was just out, I was going to wait to see if she kept it up. My first mistake.

About 30 minutes later I decided I was going to let her out one more time and when I approached the crate I could smell the deed. She sat there in the back of her crate with her head down and the puppy poop by the crate door.

I let her out, made no mention of the deed and cleaned it up. I felt (and still feel) horrible. I feel like I let her down since she was trying to let me know and instead I sat there knowing what was going to happen in the back of my mind.

I guess she is learning faster than I am.

Re: I'm a bad puppy mommy

You handled it perfectly and that's all you can do. You're a good puppy mommy because of the way you handled it.
If you knew she had to go and didn't let her out....but that wasn't what happened. Take it easy on yourself, girl! Live and learn.

Re: I'm a bad puppy mommy

oh no. Don't feel bad, you did not know. But now you know that she really means "business" when she whines. I have a puppy 18 wks old now and she only whines in the crate at night if she has to go out. She does not have to out at night anymore, but sometimes in the evening when we go to bed, and she has JUST been out, she whines a little, cannot settle in the crate and when I take her out she does have to go. It is a good thing that your puppy knows to tell you that, we just have to remember to listen to them.. they are so smart!!
Don't feel bad, puppy time is always tough!!

Re: I'm a bad puppy mommy

I think you both did fine! Interspecies communication can be difficult.

The other day I took my girl out after after coming home, and as I was taking off her leash when she came in, she gave me that *whine whine whine*. I thought "She was just out, she is whining because she missed me." But when I came out of the bathroom myself I had a bit of a mess to clean up.

My husband reminds me that dogs are forgiving. She's my first so I am always concerned that I have somehow "ruined" her. Silly.
