Question potty outside

Is it true that if you put your pup outside to relieve itself that if you don't stay right with it the whole time, it won't house train? I stay with mine and watch her go, tell her she's good and then she wants to spend some time outside sometimes. She'll lay on the grass or lay on the back deck or just wants to look around and hang out so I go back in and get some things done. sometimes I bring her right back in like early in the AM or of course at night. But mid day, I usually don't. Will this confuse her on house breaking? My husband thinks that's absurd but the breeder said it will confuse her.

I have a fully fenced in back yard, and I left my puppy out there often by herself. I let her in when or if she wanted to come, but by the time she was around 4 months she would just hang out and play for hours sometimes.

My puppy was 12 wks when I brought her home, and she was used to being outside at the breeders, in fact, had never been in the house until she came home with me. I don't know if it was because of that, or in spite of it, but she was house trained very quickly. But I don't see how staying outdoors would adversely effect potty training.
