Crate Training

So my 11wk old GSP is currently being crate trained. On my off days (sat & sun) should I still put him on the same schedule as if I'm at work? Obviously I'm going to ease him into being at home out of the crate later on but just so he gets used to the hours each day. Thank you for your input everyone.

I never did. But they did still spend some time in the crate each day it just wasn't on a regular schedule.

Honestly, I didn't have any problem crate training my boy. I didn't even crate train "properly." I just kinda tossed him in when our crate arrived and gave him a couple treats to make him understand the crate was a good place. Really, I just put him in there when I couldn't watch him. No schedule. Only schedule I had was having him go potty at certain times.

I never really did a regular schedule either. A young puppy should spend the vast majority of their day in the crate (I mean, they're asleep most of the day anyway so what's the difference?). Basically that's how it was for Minka and she'd also go in when I couldn't directly supervise her. It's never been a problem for her as it was always a place to sleep or chew on something and never was used as a punishment.

In my mind there's no harm in just doing your off days in a way that feels right to you. I'd argue that he needs to get used to your schedule. If weekends mean more time with you that's all the better for him, and if you stick to the schedule he won't know any different because that's life.

Correct bad behavior, don't redirect. Redirecting is rewarding, not resolving.
