Puppy Chasing Bugs

Hi! My puppy is 3months and 1 week old and very obedient... unless he's chasing a bug outside. Bugs are usually fireflies at night and moths during the day. He gets so intent on chasing the bug that he doesn't even turn his head when I call him. Is there any way to break this behavior? I'm afraid that it will cause him to suddenly sprint under a moving car or some other danger.

I've been giving him treats and praise every time he does turn his head, but often times his want for the bug is greater than for the treat. He does get a decent amount of exercise, 2-3 short walks a day (I don't go far because he still needs his third vaccination), and basic training everyday.

I immediately break it off to prevent OCD behavior.

Yeah, I'm with Wolfy -- I've seen intent bug chasing as an early precursor to severe OCD. People tend to think it's cute and funny in pups...until they start chasing headlights, going through glass windows, and doing crazy stuff. Nip it in the bud.

A good "leave it "command. Redirecting with a toy. Just give your pup a different job, to do by chasing a ball or Toy.

Okay, thank you! We just started learning "fetch" with a ball, so maybe that could help outside!

Keep him leashed outside. Don't allow him to rehearse the behavior. If he starts going after bugs pull him away and redirect him to a toy. If he ignores you end the session outside and crate him for 5-10 minutes and try again later. I give pups 3 tries to make a good choice then I remove all their choices. Also besure you are teaching new commands and behaviors away from high level distractions. Work on your recall somewhere with no to very low distractions. Once he is successful at that then you can begin to change where you you do it.

I put Deja on a down stay next to me. If she still reacts, she goes inside.
