Here's what we've started with Porter for leash manners - put the loop on your right wrist, put your left hand about 18-24" down from that so that your left hand is by your side (the leash will be crossing in front of your hips/pelvis). This keeps him on my left side with not a lot of slack. Of course, we stop often and give him the length of the leash so he can explore, but then say "Okay, let's go" and resume the previous position. I keep praising him as he walks like this and make sure he gets plenty "exploration" breaks. Also, if he starts pulling, I gently pull him back saying "Easy", then let the leash go slack - after two or three times in a row, he seems to get it and we keep some slack. He's only 3 1/2 m/o, so we have to do that fairly frequently - especially after an exploration break, but he's doing better and better the more we practice.
Life's a journey, enjoy the ride!
