First walks

Hey guys, I'll be picking up my new puppy in a couple weeks and one thing that is important to me is to teach loose leash walking from the very start on a flat color, likely via the "silky leash" method or something similar. But for when the pup is very young and in rare circumstances where I don't have time to follow the "pulling never works" rule, what do you guys think about using a harness as a bridge? Not necessarily a no pull harness, just something other than the flat collar which will be used only with no pull rules.

Also, does anyone have suggestions for places where we could practice off leash walks pre- final vaccines? We have hiking trails around and I found a more hidden one but there are still dogs that use it. My house is right next to both a tennis court and school playground but the former is locked and the latter is adorned with numerous prominent no dog signs. Thanks!

Not really a lot of "Harness" fans here??? I use a British Slip Lead for every dog myself ... but apparently I'm kinda an odd ball.

Pre fully vaccinated ... best advise is inorganic surfaces only ... aside from your back yard. Parvo lives in organic matter. Concrete and asphalt surfaces ... and no extremely limited running around or hard stops and turns!!

But for lots of "puppy stuff" see here.:

Welcome aboard.

Agree with woodland areas etc I used parking lots or industrial lots after hours. Keeping the pup on food to nose and then a few steps into heeling. I would use the pre-vaccine time to do food toss games, food wait games, start on the board, the perch, circle right, circle left, sitz and platz (without command) with food etc. Crate Games. Relationship building and then you can branch out from there. Good luck with your pup!!
