Puppy knows how to escape..

Hi all, this is my last major question, because of all of you, my puppy and I have been doing marvelously, and keep improving every single day...

Only ONE major problem, the front entrance door, he knows how to open it already... My puppy has no interest in opening the door UNLESS I leave, he freaks out unless I bring him to wherever I'm going, if I don't he pushes the lock, and holds the door handle.

Because of this, he ran out TWICE, and could've gotten hit by a car, but my sister ran after him and got him.

He hates being separated from me, I can't even go to the bathroom unless he comes with to sit and stare at me.

How can I get him to stop doing this, do I need to change my whole front door handle and all of that?

This is concerning me, we live right in front of a school. Literally, the front view of my house is a school, I cross the street literally a ONE second cross, bam, elementary school.

The school gets very busy doing school time, our street is quiet overall, but this WILL be a major issue... Once, it's school time, because of all the crowding of cars, and I do NOT want my dog getting hit.

Yes, you do. This isn't something you can risk with training that may or may not be adequately proofed when you leave and aren't there to enforce it. You have to secure your door so that he can't escape -- period. His life depends on it.

We had to change our front door hardware because one of my dogs was manipulating the handle and opening it if the deadbolt wasn't engaged. It's not a terribly expensive project, and it's DIY. Get it done this weekend!

Although crating him while you're gone would be an alternative, I still would change the door handle because dogs escape crates. I've known a couple that could bend and collapse a wire crate and slip through the gaps to let themselves out. One of my dogs could open up cages at the vet and the groomer. It happens. I thus wouldn't want to rely on a crate as the sole barrier between your dog and being hit by a car....so secure that door!

That is one smart pup!

I'd think about a deadbolt lock along with the change of door handle.

Keep the door locked so he can't open it and also crate him. I had a dog who could open a door or gate and he never outgrew it.

What kind of door handle is it? Would one of those toddler safety covers work?

It's one of those curving handles, the fancy ones. But, you type in a PIN code for entrance... None of uses keys, so the lock turns from the person behind... The door also locks by it's self.

He figured out how to push the latch I guess, and the doorknob.
