Mine didn't start loving fetch until 6 months. He loved tug even at 8 weeks old so when he got older I got a ball on string and I would tug with him then tell him to out and throw it. If he brought it back to me I would tug with him some more.

If your pup comes from a pedigree with schutzhund dogs or just drivey dogs in general then just let your pup mature.

Some dogs just don't have the drive to really love the game though. I had a show line that literally could care less about fetch.

Yes, I would just like to get him to bring back the object, running without taking a detour. Not looking for a competition retrieve or anything.

Try teasing him with it, then only rolling it a few feet away, don't throw it. Lots of encouragement to get it turn back to you. If he comes without it, take him to it with encouragement and when he picks it up move back a couple steps and call him to you.

Keep the whole game moving and build as much excitement as you can for chasing the ball, all you need is one return for you to roll it again to start making it clear to him, so whatever it takes to be able to reward him. See what I mean?

Try the two toy trick. It works. I taught Lisl to fetch by four months. Now I can't get her to stop.

Always a dirty slobbery Kong in my lap during the warm months. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
