Puppy Separation Anxiety???

Hello! I'm a new poster to this forum, although I've been following it for quite some time. My boyfriend and I just got a three and a half month old white GSD. He's almost perfect; knows his basic commands and walks wonderfully on a leash.

The problem is that he has separation anxiety. He follows me EVERYWHERE, and when Boyfriend calls him, he snuggles up to me instead of going to him. He won't even eat if I'm not in the same room. When we put him in the crate, even if it's just for a second, he whines like someone is tearing him limb from limb. I've tried putting toys in the crate with him, feeding him in the crate to get him used to it, putting my old tshirts in the crate along with his mom and dad's stuffed Whale that the breeder gave me. Still, nothing.

I really want to work on Crate Games with him, but he can't concentrate on anything in the crate other than getting out. Any kind of help or advice would be appreciated. I start school tomorrow and really want him to feel as if his crate is his safe place.

It could be your pup is afraid of closed in spaces - some dogs don't do well in a crate for that reason. For when you go to school, I would make a room puppy proof or get an X pen - put the crate in there - door open with special toys inside. Put food and water bowls in one corner, piddle pads in another. Leave a radio or TV on when you go. I would start slowly - after exercise - to make sure pup is tired out - I would put pup in his "room" , say calmly "be good" then leave the house or apt. for 15 minutes. Come back - keep it low keyed - say calmly "I'm back" - take pup outside to potty. Practice couple of times a day - gradually increasing the time you are gone.
